The offer will coincide with AMC opening several theaters across the country, but not all of them. The decision to open will be made on a case by case basis, with specific opening dates for each theater available on AMC’s website. The first set of theaters will be opening on August 20, the anniversary date, and will be offering the special 15 cent price for that day only, followed by a longer period of reduced-cost showings as more theaters open up.

Though there are few films releasing this month, AMC plans to buoy its listings by offering showings of older classics like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. They will also be opening in time for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which is premiering August 26 internationally, and in select North American theaters September 3. Older films will be going for $5 a ticket, while new releases, like the upcoming film The New Mutants will be $10. On top of that, AMC plans to run their theaters in compliance with social distancing requirements, dramatically reducing the number of seats available in each showing.

With the U.S. in particular continuing to struggle with Coronavirus, it’s unclear whether audiences will be willing or able to return to theaters in any significant capacity. While it’s certainly a strong offer for the re-opening, health concerns still loom large in any social environment, even in ideal conditions. As a result, several studios have instead chosen to embrace streaming and VOD; most notably Disney has announced Mulan will be releasing exclusively on Disney+ for an additional fee.
