Recent news from Rockstar has not been kind to the beloved Red Dead Redemption 2. The studio announced that further major updates to Red Dead Online would not be coming as the team gets ready to ramp up the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. As a result, fans have mourned Red Dead Online through various posts on social media and by hosting large gatherings at grave sites throughout New Austin. However, Red Dead 2’s overall lack of extra content may be alleviated soon, thanks to the modding efforts of the community.

Created by modder CruelMasterMC, Red Dead Redemption 2’s “Life of Crime” mod delivers a new single-player experience for the game. This mod is much more than a simple collection of missions plopped into New Austin for Arthur or John to complete; it’s actually quite robust. CruelMasterMC’s mission statement for the mod, as detailed on the NexusMods website, is for fans to play an entirely new character independent of Arthur or John and experience a brand-new story. Life of Crime allows players to create their own custom character with RPG-style skill trees and rise to the top after breaking out of Siska Penitentiary. As of this writing, players can build their empire in Life of Crime with a manor heist mission, a train heist mission, or partaking in the various other ways players can earn money in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Everything detailed in this mod is currently a work in progress with a long way to go until it is feature-complete. Plans for the Life of Crime include adding jobs such as bounty hunting and crafting even more heists while creating a unique story. CruelMasterMC has stated that the plot will take place before the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 but plans to add more jobs and heists before expanding the single-player narrative. Fans that would like to download this PC mod can find it at NexusMods and will also have to download Script Hook RDR2 and ASI Loader to get Life of Crime working correctly. After that, players can start the mod by speaking to the white hat at Copperhead Landing in the game.

Despite selling so well and receiving multiple Game of the Year awards, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to live in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto. Reports indicate that a planned next-gen update for Red Dead 2 is in trouble, while a remake of the first game has been scrapped to work on GTA Online and GTA 6. However, a beloved game like Red Dead Redemption 2 will likely continue to thrive thanks to the community’s continued dedication and mod support.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
