Depp had the previous weeks to present his case in chief, giving his full testimony and presenting witnesses to testify on his behalf. So far, at least in the court of public opinion, this has been going well for him. Heard was even reportedly so upset with the media coverage of the trial, and the reaction of the public to her, that she fired her PR team and switched to a new firm.

Yesterday was the first day for Heard’s team to present her case. They started with an expert witness, psychologist Dawn Hughes, who diagnosed Heard with PTSD and concluded that Heard was a victim in her marriage. Today, Heard herself has begun her testimony and gets the chance to tell her side of the story. The actress, most well known for her work in Aquaman, has faced much scrutiny over the years since the demise of her marriage.

She was the first to come forward with claims of abuse against Depp and, as this was the height of the Me Too movement, the public generally believed her. However, Depp never admitted to the allegations, and recordings of the couple were released in the following years that painted Heard in a very bad light. Past partners of Depp, including actress Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his children, have also come to his defence.

While the public has flip-flopped a lot on who to believe here since this entire situation began in 2016, the trial has shifted much favor towards Depp. The entire trial is being live-streamed for anyone to watch on many online platforms, and hearing the full story, seeing the full evidence, has changed a lot of minds as to what went on. Of course, most of this evidence has been presented by Depp’s team to prove his case. The behavior of both Heard and Depp, as well as their lawyers, has also been looked at a lot and has been subject to many memes and compilations.

Though domestic violence plays a serious role in this case, it’s actually a defamation case. Depp is suing his former wife for $50 million due to an op-ed that she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018. In the article, she details her experience with abuse and Depp claims that these are not only untrue allegations, but that they caused him damages in his professional and personal life. Heard is countersuing for $100 million.
