One minute after the man met Chism and gave her his phone, Chism walked about 6 feet from the checkpoint and began using the interviewee’s phone. She told the interviewee that she was helping fill out some employee paperwork for him, according to the police report.
“In my mind, I was thinking maybe she is trying to help, you know,” the victim told WREG.
The victim noticed what the security guard had done after the person he was interviewing with asked to see the interview invitation. He opened his email to find it, and he saw an email from CashApp about his recent transactions, WREG reported.
“Money that I sent. I said, ‘No, no I didn’t send money to nobody,’” the man said about the transaction email. The man said that the email stated $700 had been sent.
A CashApp deposit of $200 was sent to Chism from the job seeker’s phone using the money-sending app. Another $500 deposit was attempted by Chism, but it did not go through, police said.
The police were called and Chism was taken to the Memphis police station to be questioned. Police said the security guard did not confess to the theft immediately. When the investigators signed into the money-sending app on her phone, the transaction history showed the deposits from the victim’s account, according to WREG.
The victim told WREG that the fact she was on duty when she committed the theft made it even more surprising to him.
“It is security, so that is the one person that you trust in the building,” the victim said.
Chism has been charged with two felonies and four misdemeanors, including theft and fraud charges. The security guard was taken to Jail East after confessing but was later released. Chism appeared in court on Monday morning.
Newsweek reached out to the Memphis Police Department for comment but did not hear back by publication time.
