Officially, the New World open beta will run from September 9 through September 12, making it short but sweet. The open beta will be, as the name implies, open to all comers. It won’t require a pre-order or pre-purchase. MMO fans will be able to download the game and play it as they like for the duration of the open beta. While aspects of the game could change between open beta and launch, the full game will be accessible. Note that all progress in the New World open beta will be erased prior to launch, as well.

Accompanying the announcement of New World’s open beta was an in-engine cinematic trailer for the MMO. The trailer sets up the story and lore of New World, introducing many of the conflicts that players can expect to discover in-game once they start playing. “I will say a prayer for the souls of your crew,” says a mysterious voice, hinting at the dangers that await players as they journey to the New World and all that awaits on the island.
The premise of the game is also established in the cinematic trailer. The player journeys to the New World for treasure and adventure, but their ship is waylaid before they arrive at the island proper. Players will wash up on the shore of the island, where they’ll have to start their lives from scratch. It’s a prototypical MMO origin story. Of course, New World has a host of exciting storylines to follow from there that should keep players busy for a while yet.
New World releases September 28 on PC.
